Alpheus Finch

108 years ago today, on 13 July 1918, Chris’s 2x great grandfather, Alpheus Finch died in Sheffield, Iowa.

Al to Chris

Al was born 11 January, 1856 in Union Center, Broome County, New York, but his father, Rufus brought him to Northwood, Iowa by 1873.

There he married Jeannette “Nettie” Mitchell. Al worked in construction, and was a teamster.

Their firstborn child was Mattie Ann, born in 1875. They had five more children by 1887.

Mattie married Henry “Hank” Perry in Northwood in 1903. The couple had 12 children by 1919. Hank worked as an electrician. Mattie died in 1925 when her youngest son was just 6 years old.

Their 7th child, Clifford Alfise Perry was born in 1913. He married Ruth Dishon in Mason City Iowa in 1935. Cliff worked as an electrician like his father.

Ruth and Clifford had four children between 1936 and 1954. Their third child, Chris’s mother, Judy Perry was born in 1941.

Al to Connie

Alpheus is a direct descendant of my 8x great grandfather, Isaac Finch II, so he’s also my 5th cousin 4x removed

His father, Rufus, was a farmer. He named Alpheus after his father, Alpheus, who was born in 1789 and was also a farmer – in Chenango County, New York before moving to Broome County.

This Alpheus was the son of Sylvanus Finch, born in 1762 and served in the Revolutionary War, as did his father, Nathaniel.

Nathaniel’s father, Jacob, was born in Connecticut in 1706 and moved to New York with his father, Isaac Finch II, before 1729.

Isaac Finch II is the common ancestor for both Chris and I.

I am descended from his son, Isaac John Finch, born in 1708.

Isaac John Finch moved to Stepney, Massachusetts by 1743 and that is where his son, James was born.

James moved the family to Delaware and that is where his son Josiah was born in 1765.]

Josiah moved to Kentucky by 1785, and then to Ross County, Ohio by 1795. In 1805 his youngest daughter, Elizabeth was born.

Elizabeth married William Irwin Taylor there in 1824 and the following year their son, Rufus Luther Taylor was born. The family moved to Montgomery County, Indiana by 1840. There Rufus married Emily Irons and by 1867 he moved his family to Missouri.

Rufus‘s youngest son, James Peter “JP” Taylor was born in Holden, Missouri in 1874 the year before he Rufus died.

Emily took her children to Champaign County, Illinois after Rufus’s death and JP found work in Peoria IL where he met and married Annie Moeri. Their oldest daughter, Ruth Taylor was born there in 1897.

Ruth Taylor’s relationship with Patrick Carroll produced a son, John Carroll in 1915. Soon after she married Ervin Conard in Deer Creek, Illinois. John there met Wannita Radcliff.

John and Nita’s youngest daughter, my mother, Mary Carroll, was born in Pekin in 1943.
