Samuel was born in Stony Stafford, Buckinghamshire, England to Thomas Hatton/ Heighton (B 1729 D 1797) and Hester Hall (B 1729- D 1759) my 7x great grandparents. In 1754 they lived in London, England. Hester died when he was just 9 and at 13 he ran off to Ireland and began working for a ship owner who sent him on a voyage to Virginia in 1762.

He married Rosanna Queen (originally MacQueen) my 6x great grandmother in Loundon County, Virginia in 1767 and they had 14 children. Rosanna’s grandparents came to Colonial Maryland from Scotland. That line can be traced back to Skye Island, Inverness in the 16th century.

Samuel served in the revolutionary war in 1775 under Captain William Hoffner in the Virginia State Regiment commanded by George Gibson. He was at Yorktown with George Washington. He was awarded 100 acres of land for his 3 years of service which he selected on the Big Sandy River where he is buried. His sons Sam and William were employed by George Washington on his estate along the Potomac after the war.

Sam’s son Asa Hatton Sr (my 5x great grandfather) was born in 1775 in Loudoun County Virginia. He married twice and had 18 children including Marshall D Hatton, my 4x great grandfather. Marshall’s mother was Susan Damrell, my 5x great grandmother. Her origins are unknown. The family moved west to Indiana about 1820 and Marshall married Harriet Carmickle in Martin County Indiana in 1839.

Harriet and Marshall’s first daughter was named Cordelia Elizabeth Hatton, my 3x great grandmother. Marshall worked as a cooper and later a farmer in Edwardsport Indiana.

At the age of 20 Cordelia married Eleazar Godfrey Jr., a farmer in Knox County Indiana. The couple had 7 children, including Ida Belle Godfrey, nicknamed Addie.

Addie married Sam Myers and gave birth to Raymond Jasper Myers, my great grandfather.
